چکیده

The analysis of the properties of a sample of elliptical galaxies for which the kinetic energy of both random and rotational motions are consistently defined, shows that more than half of the so-called ‘tilt’ of the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies is accounted for by the non-homology in the dynamical structure of the systems. We find that the kinetic energy of random motions is proportional to σ1.6 0 instead of σ 2 0. We also confirm that some fraction of the tilt is accounted for by the rotation. The remaining 30% of the tilt, on the other hand, can be easily explained by stellar population effects and, possibly, by spatial non-homology.We find that, in the present sample, there is no correlation betweenmass-to-light ratio and luminosity. We are thus led to conclude that the existence of the fundamental plane can be consistently explained by the virial theorem, or, in other words, that elliptical galaxies are non-homologous virialized systems. The presence of the dynamical non-homology casts some doubts on the use of the FP as a distance indicator.

The fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies with modified Newtonian dynamics

The modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND), suggested by Milgrom as an alternative to dark matter, implies that isothermal spheres with a fixed anisotropy parameter should exhibit a near perfect relation between the mass and velocity dispersion of the form M ∝ σ. This is consistent with the observed Faber-Jackson relation for elliptical galaxies. However, the observable global properties of ellipti...

A Fundamental Plane Relation for the X-ray Gas in Normal Elliptical Galaxies

We report on the discovery of a new correlation between global parameters of the hot interstellar gas in elliptical galaxies. We reanalyze archival Chandra data for 30 normal early-type systems, removing the contributions of resolved and unresolved point sources to reveal the X-ray morphology of the hot gas. We determine the half-light radius, RX , and the mean surface brightness, IX , from the...

The Properties of Field Elliptical Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift. I: Empirical Scaling Laws ⋆

We present measurements of the Fundamental Plane (FP) parameters (the effective radius, the mean effective surface brightness, and the central velocity dispersion) of six field elliptical galaxies at intermediate redshift. The imaging is taken from the Medium Deep Survey of the Hubble Space Telescope, while the kinematical data are obtained from long-slit spectroscopy using the 3.6-m ESO telesc...

Galaxy merging , the Fundamental Plane of elliptical galaxies , and the M BH - σ 0 relation

We explore the effects of dissipationless merging on the Fundamental Plane of elliptical galaxies by using a N-body code based on a new, high performance numerical scheme (Dehnen 2002). We investigate the two extreme cases of galaxy growth by equal mass merging and accretion of small stellar systems; in a subset of simulations we also consider the presence of dark matter halos around the mergin...

I review the basic problems posed by the existence of the Fundamental Plane, and discuss its relations with the Virial Theorem (VT). Various possibilities are presented that can produce the observed uniform departure from homology (structural , dynamical) and/or from a constant stellar mass-to-light ratio. The role of orbital anisotropy and its relation with the FP thickness are also discussed....
